Irrigation contractors specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial irrigation systems. This includes designing such systems and performing the necessary excavation work.

Each irrigation system is a unique product, made specifically for the need at hand. Contractors need knowledge of moisture sensors, drip irrigation, back-flow prevention, and electronic controllers. They must troubleshoot problems and maintain components to keep the system working reliably and cost effectively.

Effective irrigation technicians and installers use their skill and experience to read technical specifications and correctly assemble sprinklers, pipes, valves and controls. They are knowledgeable regarding the varying water needs of plants over their growth cycle. They understand how elevation, sunlight, soil type, and temperature affect the way that water should be distributed.

Many irrigation contractors seek certification of their skill and experience. The Irrigation Association provides a Certified Irrigation Contractor certification. Probility University provides online courses and study material to help you achieve certification, and to pass the many State and local licensing tests that are needed in the industry.
